Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the nutritional content and the degradability of the dry matter and protein of fruits of Chloroleucon mangense and Acacia cochliacantha and of a 1:1 mixture of both, offered as supplements to Rambouillet sheep. In situ ruminal degradation was evaluated in three adult rams, fitted with a rumen cannula, with different incubation times of 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. Protein intestinal degradability was quantified with a three-step procedure: in situ ruminal incubation, in vitro enzymatic digestion, and abomasal-intestinal digestion. The fruits of C. mangense and A. cochliacantha contain 21 and 12% crude protein, 47 and 56% neutral detergent fiber, 31 and 43% acid detergent fiber, and 0.9 and 6.0% condensed tannins, respectively. The fruits of C. mangense showed a higher nutritional value and a higher dry matter and crude protein degradability (p<0.05) than those of A. cochliacantha and the 1:1 mixture. The amount of protein that reaches the small intestine is higher for the 1:1, which is an indicative that its tannin concentration is enough to increase the bypass protein that can be absorbed in the small intestine.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o conteúdo nutricional e a degradabilidade da matéria seca e da proteína de frutos de Cloroleucon mangense e Acacia cochliacantha e de uma mistura 1:1 de ambos, oferecidos como suplementos para carneiros Rambouillet. Foi avaliada a degradação ruminal in situ em três carneiros adultos, com colocação de uma cânula ruminal, com diferentes tempos de incubação de 0, 6, 12, 24, 48 e 72 horas. A degradação intestinal da proteína foi quantificada por meio de procedimento com três etapas: incubação ruminal in situ, digestão enzimática in vitro e digestão abomasal intestinal. Os frutos de C. mangense e A. cochliacantha contêm 21% e 12% de proteína bruta, 47% e 56% de fibra em detergente neutro, 31 e 43% de fibra em detergente ácido e 0,9 e 6,0% de taninos condensados, respectivamente. Os frutos de C. mangense apresentaram valor nutricional edegradabilidade da matéria seca e da proteína bruta (p<0,05) maiores que os de A. cochliacantha e da mistura 1:1. A quantidade de proteína que chega ao intestino delgado é maior para a mistura 1:1, o que é indicativo de que sua concentração de tanino é suficiente para aumentar a proteína não degradável no rúmen absorvida no intestino delgado.

Resumen: El pastoreo racional Voisin (PRV) promueve el manejo armonioso del ganado, las plantas, el agua y el suelo, lo cual puede inducir cambios positivos en las propiedades de los suelos degradados por la práctica del pastoreo extensivo. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar los cambios en las propiedades fisicoquímicas y biológicas del suelo, perdidas por la práctica del pastoreo extensivo, mediante la implementación del PRV en dos ambientes de pastoreo. Se seleccionaron dos potreros dominados por vegetación secundaria (VegSec) de selva baja y dos monocultivos (MonGra) de Hyparrhenia rufa (todos sujetos a pastoreo extensivo). Un potrero de cada ambiente continuó bajo pastoreo extensivo (14 meses) y en los otros dos se implementó el PRV (14 meses). Se tomaron muestras de suelo y hojarasca al inicio y al final del periodo de estudio. Algunas propiedades físicas y químicas variaron por efecto del momento de muestreo (P < 0.05), al final del periodo, la densidad aparente (DA), nitrógeno total (NT), materia orgánica (MO) y carbono orgánico (CO) mejoraron mientras que potasio disponible (K) aumentó marginalmente. Hubo efecto del manejo anidado en ambiente de pastoreo (P< 0.05); en VegSec, DA (P < 0.05) y P disponible (P< 0.05) mejoraron con PRV y permanecieron igual en MonGra; en MonGra, la MO (P < 0.05) y CO (P< 0.05) aumentaron solo con pastoreo extensivo (P < 0.05). La abundancia relativa y riqueza de morfoespecies de fauna edáfica se incrementaron con PRV en ambos ambientes de pastoreo (P < 0.05), donde dominó el orden Isóptera. Se concluye que a 14 meses de implementado el PRV, algunas propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas del suelo empiezan a regenerarse.

Summary: Voisin Grazing (VG) promotes harmonized management of livestock, plants, water and soil, inducing positive changes in soil properties that have been lost due to extensive grazing management. Thus, the objective of this research is to assess some physical-chemical and biological properties of soils undergoing extensive grazing by implementing VG in two grazing environments. Two paddocks dominated by dry forest early secondary vegetation (SecVeg) and two paddocks dominated by Hyparrhenia rufa (GraMon) were chosen (all sites undergoing extensive grazing). One paddock from each environment continued under extensive grazing (14 months) while VG was implemented in the other paddocks (14 months). Soil and litter samples were collected at the beginning and end of the study. Some physical and chemical properties varied due to the sampling time (P < 0.05). Bulk density (BD), total nitrogen (TN), organic matter (OM) and organic carbon (OC) improved at the end of the study, while available potassium (K) marginally increased. Soil properties also varied because of the management nested in grazing environment (P < 0.05). In SecVeg, BD (P < 0.05) and available P (P < 0.05) improved with VG, but remained the same in GraMon. In GraMon, OM (P < 0.05) and OC (P < 0.05) increased only with extensive grazing (P < 0.05). Macrofauna morphospecies abundance and richness increased with VG in both grazing environments (P < 0.05), where the order Isoptera dominated. After 14 months of implementing VG, some physical, chemical, and biological soil properties had begun to regenerate.

Resumen Se determinó producción, calidad nutritiva y preferencia de T. diversifolia por ovinos Pelibuey a diferentes edades, en tres épocas del año. Se midió la producción de materia seca (MS) y calidad nutritiva de forraje cada 14 días, desde el corte hasta 84 días de edad. Se tomaron muestras de hoja y tallo para determinar proteína cruda (PC), fibra detergente neutro (FDN) y fibra detergente ácida (FDA). Se utilizaron ocho ovinos Pelibuey adultos para determinar su preferencia por el follaje de T. diversifolia a los 42, 56 y 70 días de rebrote. La producción de MS total fue similar en otoño e invierno y ambas mayores que primavera. En otoño a los 56 días y en invierno a los 70 días después del corte, la producción de MS fue 9 t ha-1, mientras que en primavera a los 84 días fue cercana a las 3 t ha-1. El incremento o decremento de los componentes morfológicos de la biomasa a través del tiempo fue distinto entre las épocas evaluadas y mostró un comportamiento curvilíneo en el tiempo, dentro de cada época. La PC aumentó en forma lineal con la edad de corte. En otoño e invierno hubo mayor porcentaje de FDN y FDA. Las plantas de 42 días tuvieron menor porcentaje de FDA. El rendimiento de MS y la calidad nutritiva de T. diversifolia difiere según la época del año y la edad de rebrote. La edad de corte de la planta afectó su preferencia por los ovinos Pelibuey (P=0.0091), fue mayor por el follaje de 42 días, seguido por 56 y 70 días.

Abstract Production, nutritional quality and preference of T. diversifolia by Pelibuey sheep was determined, at different ages, in three seasons of the year. Dry matter (DM) production and nutritional quality of forage were measured every 14 d, from the cut to 84 d of age. Leaf and stem samples were taken to determine crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). Eight adult Pelibuey sheep were used to determine their preference for T. diversifolia foliage at 42, 56 and 70 d of regrowth. Total DM production was similar in autumn and winter and both greater than spring. In autumn at 56 d and in winter at 70 d after the cut, the production of DM was 9 t ha-1, while in S at 84 d, it was close to 3 t ha-1. The increase or decrease of the morphological components of the biomass over time was different between the seasons evaluated and showed a curvilinear behavior over time, within each season. CP increased linearly with the cutting age. In autumn and winter, there was a higher percentage of NDF and ADF. The 42-d plants had a lower percentage of ADF. The yield of DM and the nutritional quality of T. diversifolia differs depending on the season of year and the age of regrowth. The cutting age of the plant affected its preference by Pelibuey sheep (P=0.0091), it was higher for the foliage of 42 d, followed by 56 and 70 d.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da somatotropina bovina recombinante (rBST) e do reconstituinte metabólico Metabolase (MR) no reestabelecimento da atividade ovariana pós-parto de ovelhas Pelibuey. Noventa e quatro ovelhas, com seus respectivos cordeiros, foram distribuídas ao acaso a um dos seguintes tratamentos: T1, amamentação continua (AC); T2, AC + MR; T3, AC + rBST; e T4, AC + MR + rBST. Foram avaliados percentagem de ovulação, alterações de peso em ovelhas e carneiros, incidência do estro, início e retorno ao estro, parição, fecundidade e prolificidade. As maiores percentagens de ovulação foram registradas para AC em T1 e T2, e as menores para rBST em T3 e T4. Os tratamentos tiveram efeito significativo sobre peso dos cordeiros. As ovelhas em T3 apresentaram menor incidência de estro (52,9%), além de maior início (26,8±1,9 horas) e retorno ao estro (66,6%). A parição (86,2%) e a fecundidade (1,8±0,2) foram significativamente maiores em T2. A aplicação da rBST nas ovelhas incrementa o peso corporal dos cordeiros, em razão do aumento na produção de leite, mas afeta negativamente a atividade reprodutiva pós-parto, em razão da perda de peso corporal das ovelhas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) and of the metabolic restorative preparation Metabolase (MR) on the reestablishment of the post-partum ovarian activity of Pelibuey sheep. Ninety-four ewes, with their respective lambs, were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: T1, continuous suckling (CS); T2, CS + MR; T3, CS + rBST; and T4, CS + MR + rBST. Ovulating percentages, weight changes in ewes and lambs, incidence of estrus, onset and return to estrus, calving, fecundity, and prolificacy were evaluated. The highest ovulation percentages were recorded for CS in T1 and T2, and the lowest ones for rBST in T3 and T4. The treatments had a significant effect on lamb weight. Ewes in T3 had the lowest incidence of estrus (52.9%), besides a greater onset (26.8±1.9 hours) and return to estrus (66.6%). Calving (86.2%) and fecundity (1.8±0.2) were significantly higher in T2. The application of rBST in ewes increases lamb body weight, due to increased milk production, but affects negatively post-partum reproductive activity due to the loss of ewe body weight.

Abstract In Campeche, México, the annual mean growth rate of chihua squash (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber) was 28 % and its cultivation went from 3 200 to 12 000 ha from 2009 to 2014. The sale of the washed and dried seed domestically is done in retail and through middle men, and there are no other mechanisms for regional or national commercialization of the seed. The objective of this study was to analyze the value network of the chihua squash, to understand its members and to identify the problems it faces, in order to contribute to improve the income of producers and the strategies to position it in the regional and national market. The localities of Santo Domingo Kesté and Hool were chosen for their chihua squash production. The focus of value network was used, which is a form of organization of a specialized productive system in a common activity, characterized by the territorial concentration of its economic actors and from other institutions, with the development of economic and non-economic links that contribute to the creation of wealth for its members and their territory. Forty semi-structured interviews were applied to obtain the scope of the chihua squash in Campeche. Production costs were obtained with producers’ panels, and the profitability of the squash was evaluated; it was profitable in both study localities. In the value network, the actors who are producers and also clients stood out, as in Santo Domingo Kesté. With the value chain, the incipient integration of the actors who participate in the production process of the chihua squash seed was observed, although with great economic and productive potential in Campeche.

Resumen En Campeche, México, la tasa de crecimiento medio anual de la calabaza chihua (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber) fue 28 % y su cultivo pasó de 3 200 a 12 000 ha de 2009 a 2014. La venta de la semilla lavada y secada en forma doméstica se hace al menudeo y por intermediarios y no existen otros mecanismos de comercialización regional o nacional de la semilla. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar la red de valor de la calabaza chihua, conocer sus integrantes e identificar su problemática para coadyuvar a mejorar los ingresos de los productores y las estrategias para su posicionamiento en el mercado regional y nacional. Las localidades de Santo Domingo Kesté y Hool se eligieron por su producción de calabaza chihua. Se empleó el enfoque de red de valor que es una forma de organización de un sistema productivo especializado en una actividad común, se caracteriza por la concentración territorial de sus actores económicos y de otras instituciones con desarrollo de vínculos de naturaleza económica y no económica, que contribuyen a la creación de riqueza de sus miembros y su territorio. Cuarenta entrevistas semiestructuradas se aplicaron para obtener el entorno de la calabaza chihua en Campeche. Con paneles de productores se obtuvieron costos de producción, se evaluó la rentabilidad de la calabaza y en las dos localidades del estudio resultó rentable. En la red de valor destacaron actores que son productores y también clientes, como en Santo Domingo Kesté. Con la red de valor se observó la integración incipiente de los actores que participan en el proceso de producción de la semilla de la calabaza chihua, pero sin gran potencial económico y productivo en Campeche.

ABSTRACT: The effect of supplementary feeding on age and weight at puberty was evaluated in 79 pre-pubertal Tropical Dairy Criollo (TDC) heifers of 8 and 10 months of age, distributed in four treatments: T1 and T2) 8 month old heifers with and without supplementary feeding (WSF, n= 20) and (NSF, n= 20), respectively; T3 and T4) 10 month old heifers (WSF, n= 20) and (NSF, n= 19). Average age and weight at puberty in T2 and T4 was 20.4 ± 0.5 months and 287.2 ± 5.9 kg compared with 17.5 ± 0.6 months and 296.8 ± 7.8 kg in T1 and T3 (p < 0.05). The number, follicular diameter (mm) and concentration of progesterone (ng mL-1) in blood was higher (p < 0.05) in T1 and T3 compared to T2 and T4. Supplementary feeding decreases the age at puberty, increases weight gain, improves follicular development and increases blood progesterone concentration in TDC females.

RESUMEN: Se evaluó el efecto de la complementación alimenticia sobre la edad y peso a la pubertad en 79 hembras Criollo Lechero Tropical (CLT) prepúberes de 8 y 10 meses de edad, distribuidas en cuatro tratamientos: T1 y T2) vaquillas de 8 meses con y sin complementación alimenticia (CCA, n= 20) y (SCA, n= 20), respectivamente; T3 y T4) vaquillas de 10 meses (CCA, n= 20) y (SCA, n= 19). La edad y peso a la pubertad en T2 y T4 fue de 20.4 ± 0.5 meses y 287.2 ± 5.9 kg, en T1 y T3 fue de 17.5 ± 0.6 meses y 296.8 ± 7.8 kg. El número, diámetro folicular (mm) y concentración de progesterona (ng mL-1) en sangre fue mayor (p < 0.05) en T1 y T3. La complementación alimenticia disminuye la edad a la pubertad, incrementa la ganancia de peso, mejora el desarrollo folicular y aumenta concentración de progesterona en sangre de hembras CLT.

Abstract In animal reproduction, natural methods like male effect (ME) and the action of neuroexcitatory amino acids accelerate puberty and induce ovulation in ewe lambs. In this study it was found that the biostimulation of the ewe and the neurotransmitter action of amino acids of a commercial energy tonic (CET, Metabolase®) may change the pulse frequency of luteinizing hormone (LH) and induce ovulation in prepubertal ewes. The objective was to evaluate the ME and CET action to induce ovulation and characterize the preovulatory peak of LH in prepubertal Pelibuey ewes. The experimental design included two factors (CET and ME) on two levels each (without: wo, and with: w). The treatments were randomized to 46 ewes: T1 (n = 12) control group: ewes without CET and without ME (woCETwoME), T2 (n=12) ewes with CET and without ME (wCETwoME), T3 (n=10) ewes without CET and with ME (woCETwME) and T4 (n=12) ewes with CET and with ME (wCETwME). Ovarian activity (OA) and the ovulation rate (OR) were evaluated by laparoscopy. The characteristics of the preovulatory peak of LH were evaluated in response to ME to confirm the first ovulation. The action of the CET, the male effect as well as their interaction, did not increase (p>0.05) the number of ovarian follicles of different diameters. The male effect and its interaction with the energy tonic increased (p≤0.05) the OR (woCETwME: 0.70 and wCETwME: 0.75). The response of the preovulatory peak of LH was similar (p>0.05) in ewes with ME with or without CET (wCETwME: 91.7 % and woCETwME: 70.0 %). The male effect and its interaction with CET induce the preovulatory LH peak and the first ovulation in prepubertal Pelibuey ewes.

Resumen En la reproducción, los métodos naturales como el efecto macho (EM) y la acción de los aminoácidos neuroestimuladores aceleran la pubertad e inducen la ovulación en corderas. En el presente estudio se consideró que la bioestimulación del carnero y la acción neurotransmisora de los aminoácidos, en un reconstituyente energético comercial (REC, Metabolase®), podrían modificar la frecuencia de pulsos de la hormona luteinizante (LH) e inducir la ovulación en ovejas prepúebres. El objetivo fue evaluar el EM y la acción del REC para inducir la primera ovulación y caracterizar el pico preovulatorio de LH en ovejas Pelibuey prepúberes. El diseño experimental fue con un arreglo de dos factores (REC y EM) en dos niveles cada uno (sin: s; con: c) y los tratamientos fueron asignados al azar a 46 ovejas: T1 (n=12) testigo, ovejas sin REC y sin EM (sRECsEM); T2 (n=12) ovejas con REC y sin EM (cRECsEM); T3 (n=10) ovejas sin REC y con EM (sRECcEM); y T4 (n=12) ovejas con REC y con EM (cRECcEM). La actividad ovárica (AO) y la tasa ovulatoria (TO) se evaluaron por laparoscopía. Las características del pico preovulatorio de LH se evaluaron en respuesta al EM para confirmar la primera ovulación. La acción del REC, el efecto macho, así como su interacción, no aumentaron (p>0.05) la cantidad de folículos ováricos de diferente diámetro. El efecto macho y su interacción con el REC aumentaron (p≤0.05) la TO (sRECcEM: 0.70 y cRECcEM: 0.75). La respuesta del pico preovulatorio de LH fue similar (p>0.05) en las ovejas con EM con o sin REC (cRECcEM: 91.7 % y sRECcEM: 70.0 %). El efecto macho y su interacción con el REC inducen el pico preovulatorio de LH y la primera ovulación en ovejas Pelibuey prepúberes.

En este texto se planteó como objetivo desarrollar un índice agregado para evaluar la sustentabilidad en los tres grupos de agroecosistemas presentes en la microcuenca Paso de Ovejas 1 y se planteó como hipótesis que los sistemas con presencia del componente ganadero presentarían un mayor grado de sustentabilidad, debido a un uso complementario de los recursos. Para el presente estudio se definió la sustentabilidad agrícola como el proceso de obtención de productos agropecuarios que satisfagan necesidades de la población, mediante un conjunto de prácticas agrícolas que logran conservar y mejorar la cantidad y calidad de los recursos naturales, y de este modo asegurar su permanencia y mejorar el desempeño de los AES en el tiempo.

In this text it is set as a goal the development of an aggregate index for assessing sustainability in the three agroecosystem groups present in the watershed Paso de Ovejas 1 and it was hypothesized that the systems with presence of stockbreeding would have a greater sustainability due to a complementary use of the resources. For the present study, agricultural sustainability was defined as the process of getting agricultural products that meet the population needs through a set of agricultural practices that conserve and improve the quantity and quality of natural resources, and thus ensure their permanence and enhance the performance of the AES over time.

Dans ce texte, le but proposé cherche le développement d'un indice global pour l'évaluation de la durabilité dans les trois (3) groupes d'agro-écosystèmes présentes au micro-bassin Paso de Ovejas 1 et l'hypothèse proposée expose que les systèmes qui ont la présence du composant d'élevage de bétail présenteraient un plus grand dégrée de durabilité grâce à une utilisation complémentaire des ressources. Dans cet étude, la durabilité agricole a été définie comme le processus d'obtention de produits agricoles qui parviennent à satisfaire les nécessités de la population, à travers d'un ensemble de pratiques agricoles qui réussissent à préserver et à améliorer la quantité et la qualité des ressources naturels et, de cette manière, à garantir son permanence et l'amélioration de la performance des AES au fur et à mesure du passage du temps.

Since the beginnings of agriculture, about ten thousand years ago, mankind has benefited from the use of its products by satisfying needs for food and by trade. The agricultural production systems have become more organized and productive, as a result of a greater knowledge on agriculture. However, specialization in agronomyhas led in some cases to the implementation of technical innovations that put out key elements of the production systems, such as social and cultural aspects, climate, and physical, chemical and biological soil properties, that result in failure in the practice. The use of different types of models in agriculture has become an alternative for planning and research, since they can be used to predict the behavior of a plant or animal under different management practices, the soil characteristics, the interaction among different crops, and the behavior of production systems in which livestock and crops interact. Currently the effect of agricultural policies, the rationality of producers, the market characteristics and the environmental aspects have been incorporated. From the point of view of the theory of agroecosystems they have been used to simulate the sustainability, under a holistic and systemic vision. Another important development has been to consider the producer as subject that participates in the modeling process and not as a component of the system that needs to be modeled in what is called the participative modeling. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to analyze the different approaches for the application of the models for the study and planning of agriculture, and their challenges.

Desde el inicio de la agricultura, hace aproximadamente diez mil años, la humanidad se ha beneficiado de sus productos al satisfacer, con ellos, sus necesidades de alimentación y comercializarlos. Los sistemas de producción agrícola son más organizados y productivos, como resultado del mayor conocimiento sobre agricultura. Sin embargo, la especialización dentro de la agronomía ha propiciado en algunos casos la implementación de innovaciones técnicas que soslayan elementos clave de los sistemas de producción, como los aspectos sociales, culturales, climáticos, o las propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas del suelo, originando el fracaso en la práctica. El uso de los diferentes tipos de modelos dentro de la agricultura ha surgido como una alternativa de planificación e investigación, dado que pueden utilizarse para predecir el comportamiento de una planta o animal con diferentes manejos, las características del suelo, la interacción entre diferentes cultivos, y el comportamiento de sistemas de producción con interacción de ganado y cultivos. Actualmente se ha incorporado el efecto de políticas agrícolas, racionalidad de los productores, características del mercado y aspectos ambientales. Desde el enfoque de los agroecosistemas estos modelos se han usado para simular la sustentabilidad, bajo una visión holística y sistémica. Otra evolución importante ha sido considerar al productor como un sujeto que participa en la modelación y no como un componente más del sistema a modelarse, en el denominado modelaje participativo. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente documento es analizar los distintos enfoques de la aplicación de los modelos para el estudio y planificación agrícola, y sus retos.

Native trees are an important source of forage for livestock, particularly in regions having prolonged dry periods. Some tree species have fast growth rates, good nutritional quality, and the ability to produce forage during dry periods when the need for forage is greater. Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. is a tree native to tropical America that has a high forage potential. This species is mentioned in a number of studies assessing the forage potential of trees in a diverse array of environments and vegetation communities, but little is known about its agronomic management and there is a lack of published information on adequate management and cultivation of this species as a forage tree. There is enough information on the nutritional value of the species, but supplementation with this forage and resulting animal responses have not been extensively studied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the available literature for information on the presence, management, and forage quality of G. ulmifolia in production systems with domestic ruminants.

Los árboles nativos son una fuente importante de forraje para el ganado, sobre todo en regiones con época de estiaje prolongada. Algunas especies arbóreas son de rápido crecimiento y buena calidad nutricional, además de tener la capacidad de producir forraje durante la época seca, cuando la necesidad de forraje es mayor. El guácimo (Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.) es un árbol nativo de América tropical que tiene un alto potencial forrajero y del que aún se conoce poco sobre su manejo agronómico. El guácimo es una especie que aparece en muchos estudios de diagnóstico de especies forrajeras en diversos sitios y asociaciones de vegetación, pero existe escasa información publicada sobre su manejo agronómico adecuado para ser cultivado como árbol forrajero. Existe información sobre el valor nutricional del guácimo, aunque la suplementación y la respuesta animal con esta especie tampoco han sido estudiadas de manera extensa. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la literatura existente sobre la presencia, el manejo y la calidad forrajera del guácimo en sistemas productivos con rumiantes domésticos.

Con el fin de determinar la tasa de manifestación del estro y la tasa de gestación en vaquillas Criollo Lechero Tropical (CLT), sincronizadas con una dosis baja (12,5 mg) de PGF2α. Cincuenta y cuatro vaquillas CLT cíclicas fueron asignadas al azar a 2 tratamientos: a) Dosis baja (DB; n=27): inyección intramuscular (IM) de 12,5 mg PGF2α; y b) Dosis completa (DC, n=27; grupo control): inyección IM de 25 mg PGF2α. Desde 12 h después de la PGF2α y durante 5 días se realizó detección de estros cada 4 h por 30 min para determinar el inicio y final del estro, su duración y la tasa de manifestación del estro. Las vaquillas recibieron inseminación artificial (IA) 12 h pos-estro detectado y fueron monitoreadas por ultrasonografía transrectal cada 4 h desde el final del estro hasta la ovulación para determinar el tiempo y tasa de ovulación. Las vaquillas que repitieron calor recibieron una segunda IA. Se diagnosticó la gestación 45 días pos-IA. La tasa de manifestación del estro y de ovulación fue 100% en ambos tratamientos. No hubo diferencia significativa (P>0,5) entre tratamientos en el tiempo de inicio del estro y de ovulación, duración del estro y tasa de gestación a primer servicio de IA. La tasa de gestación a segundo servicio de IA y la tasa de gestación general fueron significativamente mayores (P<0,05) para DB que para DC (77,7% y 74 vs 30% y 37%), respectivamente. La sincronización con dosis baja de PGF2α resultó en aceptable tasa de gestación general en vaquillas CLT, lo que significa menor costo del programa de sincronización

In order to determine estrus manifestation and pregnancy rates in Tropical Milking Criollo (CLT) heifers synchronized to estrus with a low dose (12,5 mg) of PGF2α fifty-four cyclic virgin CLT heifers were randomly assigned to two treatments: 1) Low dose (DB; n=27): i.m. injection of 12,5 mg PGF2α; and 2) Complete dose (DC, n=27; control group): i.m. injection of 25 mg PGF2α. From 12 h after PGF2α and during five days estrus was detected every 4 h for 30 min to determine the start and end of estrus, estrus duration and estrus manifestation rate. Heifers were artificially inseminated (IA) 12 h after estrus detection and were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography every 4 h from the end of estrus until ovuation to determine time and rate of ovulation. Repeat breeder heifers received a second IA service. Pregnancy was diagnosed 45 days after IA. Estrus manifestation and ovulation rates were 100% in both treatments. No significant (P>0.0%) difference was found among treatments for time of estrus and ovulation, estrus duration or pregnancy rate at first IA service. Pregnancy rate at second IA service and overall pregnancy rate were significantly (P<0.05) higher for DB than for DC (77.7% and 74% vs 30% and 37%), respectively. Estrus synchronization with a low dose of PGF2α resulted in an acceptable overall pregnancy rate in CLT heifers, which is reflected in a lower cost of the estrus synchronization program

El objetivo del presente estudio fue caracterizar a la ganadería bovina de doble propósito (DP) en el estado de Morelos, México, de acuerdo a la escala de producción, mano de obra familiar, estructura del ingreso, diferencias en manejo, uso de tecnología y la visión de los productores sobre las fortalezas, oportunidades, debilidades y amenazas del sistema de DP. El estudio contó con la participación de 165 productores. Se aplicó un cuestionario a los mismos y se realizó un taller de planeación estratégica FODA. Los datos fueron analizados mediante un análisis multivariado cluster (dendrograma y k-medias). Lograndose identificar 5 tipos de ganadería bovina de DP en el estado de Morelos, los cuales se denominaron: a) empresarial (E, 7%); b) de transición pecuaria (TP;18%); c) familiar agropecuario (FA; 19%); d) familiar pecuario (FP;21%) y e) de subsistencia pecuario (SP;35%). En general, los productores se caracterizan por tener una edad avanzada y bajo nivel educativo; el principal sistema de manejo utilizado es el semiestabulado, con superficies y hatos pequeños, por lo que diversifican su ingreso con actividades intra y extrafinca. Los productores tipo E y TP tienen mayor ingreso, superficie, mano de obra contratada, infraestructura, equipo y uso de tecnología, en comparación con los productores FA, FP y SP. En conclusión, en el estado de Morelos existen 5 tipos de ganadería bovina de DP, todos con diferencias productivas y tecnológicas, mismas que deben ser consideradas en la ejecución de planes de desarrollo para el sector ganadero

The objective of the present study was to characterize the dual-purpose (DP) cattle system in the State of Morelos, Mexico, according to the scale of production, use of family work force, income, differences in cattle management, use of technology, and farmers’ perception on the strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats of the DP system. A total of 165 producers were included in the study. A structured questionnaire was applied to the producers and a SWOT strategic planning workshop. Data were analyzed through a multivariate cluster analysis (dendrogram and k-means). Five types of DP cattle systems were identified in the state of Morelos, which were as follows: 1) business activity (E, 7%), 2) livestock transition (TP, 18%), 3) family agricultural (FA, 19%), 4) family livestock (FP, 21%), and 5) subsistence livestock (SP, 35%). In general, the producers are characterized by an old age and low educational level; the main management system used is semi-drylot, with small areas and herds, so they get their income from both intra and extra farm activities. Producers E and TP have a higher income, a larger land surface, and more hired work force, infrastructure, equipment and use of technology, compared to producers FA, FP and SP. In conclusion, there are five types of DP cattle systems in the State of Morelos, all of them with productive and technological differences that must be considered on the execution of developmental plans for the livestock sector

Se evaluó la tasa de desarrollo de blastocistos bovinos producidos in vitro utilizando medio de cultivo convencional para embriones bovinos y medio de cultivo para producción in vitro (PIV) de embriones humanos. Se obtuvieron ovocitos de ovarios de vacas Cebú sacrificadas en matadero. Los folículos ováricos fueron aspirados y los complejos cumulus-ovocitos (CCO) con al menos dos capas de células del cumulus intactas fueron madurados durante 22 a 24 h. Posteriormente, los CCO fueron fertilizados con semen bovino descongelado y coincubados por 20 a 24 h. Los presuntos cigotos fueron cultivados por 48 h en medio KSOM o en medio HTF modificado. En los días 3 y 5 post-fertilización in vitro (FIV), los embriones fueron cambiados a gotas nuevas de KSOM o de IVC-Two/IVC-Three. Para ambos cultivos, en el día 3 post-FIV se determinó la tasa de división y entre los 7 a 9 días post-FIV, se evaluó el desarrollo embrionario a etapa de blastocisto. La tasa de maduración in vitro fue 89,7%. La tasa de división fue 82,3% para ovocitos cultivados en KSOM y de 80,1% para ovocitos cultivados en HTF (P>0,05). La tasa de desarrollo de blastocistos fue 31,6% para embriones cultivados en KSOM y 29,5% para embriones cultivados en HTF/IVC-Two/IVC-Three (P>0,05). En conclusión, las tasas de desarrollo in vitro de blastocistos bovinos fueron similares para los embriones cultivados en un medio convencional para PIV de embriones bovinos y para los embriones cultivados en medios utilizados para PIV de embriones humanos, por lo que ambos tipos de medios pueden utilizarse para la PIV de embriones bovinos con resultados aceptables.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the blastocyst development rate for in vitro produced bovine embryos using either the conventional culture medium for bovine embryos or culture media used for the in vitro production (IVP) of human embryos. Oocytes were obtained from ovaries of slaughtered Zebu cows. Ovarian follicles were aspirated and the cumulus-oocytes complexes (COC) with at least two layers of intact cumulus cells were matured for 22 to 24 h. Following that, COC were fertilized with frozen-thawed bovine semen and coincubated for 20 to 24 h. The presumptive zygotes were cultured for 48 h in KSOM medium or modified HTF medium. On days 3 and 5, post-in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos were placed into new drops of KSOM or IVC-Two/IVC-Three. For both culture types, the cleavage rate was determined on day 3 post-IVF and the embryo development rate to blastocyst stage was evaluated on days 7 to 9 post-IVF. In vitro maturation rate was 89.7%. Cleavage rate was 82.3% for oocytes cultured in KSOM and 80.1% for oocytes cultured in HTF (P>0.05). Blastocyst development rate was 31.6% for embryos cultured in KSOM and 29.5% for embryos cultured in HTF/IVC-Two/IVC-Three (P>0.05). In conclusion, in vitro blastocyst development rates were similar for both the embryos cultured in the conventional medium for IVP of bovine embryos and the embryos cultured in media used for the IVP of human embryos, thus, both types of media can be used for the IVP of bovine blastocysts with acceptable results.

La finalidad del presente estudio fue determinar el efecto del amamantamiento en la duración del intervalo parto-primera ovulación (IPPO), los cambios de peso corporal (CPC) posparto de las hembras y la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP) y mortalidad (M) de los corderos durante los primeros 90 d posparto en la raza Pelibuey. Cuarenta y dos ovejas multíparas con sus crías se asignaron al azar a uno de tres tratamientos: amamantamiento continuo (AC; n=16), amamantamiento restringido (AR; n= 16) y destete precoz (DP; n= 10). Los corderos en AC permanecieron con sus madres las 24 h del día con amamantamiento ad libitum; en AR, los corderos amamantaron durante 30 min al día (08:00 a 08:30); y en DP, las crías se separaron de sus madres desde los 7 d de nacidos sustituyéndose la alimentación con sustituto de leche. Para eliminar el efecto confundido de la época del año en los resultados obtenidos en el manejo del amamantamiento, se integró un grupo testigo con ovejas no gestantes (OV; n= 15). La eliminación del amamantamiento con el destete total (DP) de los corderos a los 7 d de edad aumentó el número de ovejas que ovularon antes de los 56 d posparto, disminuyó el IPPO y la pérdida de peso de las ovejas (P<0,05), disminuyó la GDP de las crías y aumentó la M de los corderos respecto a AC y AR (P<0,05). El AR disminuyó el IPPO con respecto a AC, mejoró la GDP y disminuyó la M de los corderos con respecto a DP (P<0,05). El AR parece ser el mejor sistema de manejo para un adecuado desarrollo del cordero y reiniciar la actividad reproductiva de las ovejas durante los primeros tres meses posparto.

It was studied the effects of suckling on ewe parturition-first ovulation period (IPPO), changes in post-parturition body weight (CPC), and lamb daily weight gain (GDP) and mortality (M) during the first 90 d postpartum. Forty-two multiparous Pelibuey ewes with lambs were randomly assigned to one of three suckling treatments: continuous suckling (AC; n=16), restricted suckling (AR; n=16) and early weaning (DP; n=10). Ewes and lambs in AC stayed together 24 h a day nursing ad-libitum, ewes and lambs in AR stayed together for only 30 min a day (from 08:00 to 08:30) to nurse, and lambs in DP were permanently separated from their mothers at day 7 after lambing and fed with a milk formula. A blank treatment consisting of non-pregnant ewes (OV; n=15) was included to remove the effect of season on treatments. Early weaning at day 7 after birth increased the number of ewes ovulating during the first 56 days postpartum, decreased the IPPO and weight lost of ewes (P<0.05), decreased lamb GDP and increased M relative to AC and AR (P<0.05). AR decreased the IPPO compared to AC, improved lamb GDP and decreased M compared to DP (P<0.05). Restricted suckling appears to be a better system for raising lambs and restore reproductive activity of ewes during the 3 month postpartum period.

El experimento se realizó en el Rancho “Las Animas” ubicado en el municipio de Tuxtla Chico, Chiapas, México, con el objetivo de estimar la interacción del retraso del amamantamiento con la presencia o ausencia del toro como estrategia para reducir el periodo de parto-concepción en 40 vacas Pardo Suizo puras, sometidas a manejo de doble propósito. Se utilizó un diseño completamente al azar con cuatro tratamientos y diez repeticiones con un arreglo factorial con dos factores en dos niveles, siendo el tipo de amamantamiento (tradicional o retrasado) y la presencia o ausencia del toro los factores. La comparación de medias se realizó con la prueba de Tukey. Los tratamientos fueron: amamantamiento tradicional sin toro (AT-ST; n=10), amamantamiento tradicional con toro (AT+T; n=10), amamantamiento retrasado sin toro (AR-ST; n=10) y amamantamiento retrasado con toro (AR+T; n=10). Se encontró que AR+T reduce (P<0,05) el intervalo parto-concepción a 84±10,19 días comparado con 100±13,35, 190±34,84 y 156±20,63 días para AR-ST, AT+T y AT-ST, respectivamente. Por lo tanto, se concluye que practicar el retraso del amamantamiento (30 min.) ocho horas después del ordeño y exponer las vacas al toro desde los siete días posparto, puede ser una alternativa para reducir el anestro posparto e incrementar la eficiencia reproductiva en el sistema doble propósito.

The experiment was carried out in “Las Animas” ranch located in Tuxtla Chico Municipality, Chiapas, Mexico, in order to estimate the interaction between retarded suckling and sire presence used as a strategy for reducing the time between calving and conception in 40 pure Brown Swiss cows under dual purpose system. A completely randomized design was used, with four treatments and ten repetitions with a factorial arrangement with two factors in two levels, being type of suckling (traditional and retarded) and sire presence and absence, comparison of means was done with Tukey test. Treatments were; T1 (n=10): Traditional suckling without sire presence (AT-ST), T2(n=10): traditional suckling with sire presence (AT+T), T3(n=10): retarded suckling without sire presence (AR-ST) and T4(n=10): retarded suckling with sire presence (AR+T). Results showed that AR+T reduced (P<0.05) the calving-conception interval to 84±10.19days compared with 100±13.35, 190±34.84 y 156±20.63 days for AR-T, AT+T and AT-T respectively. It is therefore concluded that the combined practice of suckling retarded (30 minutes) eight hours after milking and exposing the cows to the sire as of seven days after calving could be an alternative to reduce post-partum anestrus and increasing reproductive efficiency in dual purpose system.
